Overwatch 2 Brings Back 6v6 Mode in December Tests

Overwatch 2 is set to revisit its classic 6v6 format after switching to a controversial 5v5 structure upon the game’s 2022 release. Blizzard announced that two test periods will occur in the next season, offering fans a chance to return to the original gameplay setup. The first 6v6 test, happening one week into Season 14 on December 10, will focus on role diversity, requiring at least one tank, one support, and one damage hero. However, teams can fill the other three roles more freely, with no more than three heroes per role allowed. This adjustment prevents damage-heavy teams while preserving balanced gameplay for smoother matches.

Midway through the season, a second test will run with added mechanics from Overwatch 2. These include hero reworks and a reduced focus on crowd control abilities, aligning with new game features and improving player experience. In addition to 6v6, Blizzard is testing a new 5v5 variant, allowing two heroes per role but with reduced power for tanks to maintain balance. Also introduced is a unique game mode, codenamed “Kingmaker,” which gives a “bonus” to players who are the sole representatives of their role in the match, although specifics on this reward remain under wraps.

Blizzard plans to gather player feedback during these tests and may consider keeping both 5v5 and 6v6 modes, allowing players to choose between the new and classic styles. For those who miss the original Overwatch format, this is an opportunity to rekindle the excitement of 6v6 team battles while exploring new content in Overwatch 2.

Season 14 promises to be a memorable return to the beloved hero shooter’s roots, bringing fresh variety for players eager to experience both classic and revamped team dynamics.
